I am Dr surej subash, a Consultant Physician with an MD in Ayurveda, currently practising at Ayur Bethaniya in Kerala. I have guided numerous patients to navigate seasonal transitions throughout my career, particularly during our region's extreme summer temperatures. My Ayurvedic studies have shown me that true health is not just about treating illness; it is about living in harmony with nature. Every summer, I see patients struggling with dehydration, fatigue and heat-related disorders, and I derive great pleasure from helping them achieve equilibrium through Ayurvedic practices.
This blog presents my personal experiences and knowledge about How to Stay Hydrated and Healthy During Summer With Ayurveda, which I will present through a combination of traditional Ayurvedic principles and the daily practices I use and advise my patients to follow.
UNDERSTANDING HYDRATION THROUGH AYURVEDA
According to modern medicine, hydration simply means drinking enough water. Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to hydration. The process of hydration requires people to drink sufficient water while they keep their body fluids, digestive fire (Agni) and doshas in balance. I have noticed from my experience treating patients in Kerala’s humid climate means that people often consume excessive amounts of cold water and sugary beverages. The body experiences negative effects because this practice disrupts the digestive system and creates additional health problems. Ayurveda recommends drinking water in a mindful way, preferably at room temperature or slightly cool, and in small sips throughout the day.
HYDRATION BEYOND JUST WATER
The Ayurvedic system requires people to drink fluids which provide both cooling properties and balance and replenishment. My recommended treatment options include the following:
- Buttermilk (Takra) - Light, digestive-friendly, and cooling. A pinch of cumin in the buttermilk can enhance its effect.
- Tender Coconut Water - This is nature’s perfect electrolyte drink, which can be best consumed mid-morning.
- Herbal Infusions - Coriander seed or fennel seed water reduces heat and acidity.
- Amla Juice - Strengthens immunity and cools the system.
COOLING FOODS FOR SUMMER
Hydration depends mainly on the foods we eat. Ayurveda recommends foods that are naturally cooling, juicy, and easy to digest:
- Fruits - Watermelon, muskmelon, grapes and pomegranate.
- Vegetables - Cucumbers, gourds and leafy greens.
- Grains - Rice and barley instead of wheat.
- Dairy - Pitta balance requires moderation of fresh milk and ghee consumption.
I stay away from spicy, oily, and fermented foods during summer. Even coffee and tea, though tempting, can worsen dehydration and acidity. I prefer to have cucumber raita or buttermilk after my lunch because it helps me stay refreshed throughout the day.
LIFESTYLE PRACTICES FOR SUMMER
Ayurveda teaches people how to live according to natural cycles. I practise the following lifestyle methods, which I also recommend to my patients.
- Avoid Direct Sun Exposure - Direct sun exposure should be avoided between 11 am and 3 pm.
- Wear Cotton Clothes - People should choose to wear cotton clothes because these light and breathable fabrics help them stay comfortable.
- Oil Massage (Abhyanga) - Coconut oil massage before bath helps to nourish the skin which is known as Abhyanga.
- Cooling Bath - Lukewarm water infused with vetiver and sandalwood can calm the body.
- Sleep Routine - Our body needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night. Afternoon naps should be avoided.
AYURVEDIC HERBS FOR SUMMER WELLNESS
Certain herbs are particularly beneficial in summer.
- Amla (Indian Gooseberry) - It functions as a cooling and rejuvenating agent.
- Vetiver (Khus) - This is a cooling agent which can be used in drinks and baths for cooling.
- Sandalwood - This can be applied externally for skin health.
- Ashwagandha - This herb helps to combat both fatigue and stress-related problems.
I often prepare a simple herbal mix of coriander seeds, vetiver roots, and dried amla boiled in water. This drink functions to hydrate the body while also cleansing it of toxins.
MIND-BODY BALANCE
Summer heat affects both mental functions and physical health. People experience irritability, restlessness and lack of focus. Ayurveda recommends the following calming practices.
- Pranayama - Sheetali and Sitkari pranayama techniques function as cooling methods.
- Meditation - This practice helps to regulate our emotional heat.
- Yoga - Gentle asanas such as Shavasana and forward bends can be practised daily.
I start my daily routine with Sheetali pranayama practice, which I follow with meditation. This routine helps me maintain inner peace, which remains intact during extreme heat.
LISTENING TO OUR BODY
The most essential teaching of Ayurveda shows us to pay attention to our body signals. Thirst, fatigue, irritability, headaches and dryness are the initial indicators of dehydration and Pitta imbalance. Maintaining the balance requires us to adjust our diet and hydration and daily activities based on changing seasons. I have witnessed multiple patients achieve complete health transformation through their application of these minor seasonal modifications. Ayurveda functions as a complete system for treatment while also serving as a natural way of life that enables us to exist in peace with the environment.
