I am Dr.Surej Senior Medical Consultant Physician, MD in Ayurveda, currently practicing at Ayur Bethaniya.

Brain stroke and the resultant paralysis are some major health concerns that can happen to anyone. A stroke happens when there is sudden death of brain cells. In my professional experience, I have seen cases of stroke paralysis happening after the patient faces a lack of oxygen due to some reasons. It also happens when there is a blockage in the arteries that lead to the brain.

Most people think that the treatment of stroke paralysis is either not possible or if possible can happen through allopathic medicines. Well, the truth is, there is also a successful Ayurvedic approach to stroke paralysis that I have taken for my patients. I am going to share more about the way stroke paralysis manifests and how Ayurvedic treatments for stroke paralysis are done.

What is Stroke Paralysis?

A stroke paralysis can happen in a person after the blood flow or oxygen to the brain stops for some time. Oxygen is the fuel on which our body cells work. This also includes the brain cells. When oxygen or blood does not reach the brain, some of the brain cells die. Because of the death of brain cells, the brain loses some of its functions temporarily, and it can lead to stroke paralysis. Stroke paralysis can happen to any part of your body and affects physical abilities to a great extent. In Ayurveda, the stroke paralysis condition is also known as pakshaghat.

Causes and Symptoms of Stroke Paralysis

To understand what causes stroke paralysis, you first have to look at the kind of stroke that causes the paralysis. There are two types of strokes that can happen in a person. For example, an ischaemic stroke happens when a blood vessel in the brain suffers from a blood clot. Blood clots can happen due to many reasons. Moreover, a clot can also travel to the major arteries of the brain and cause a stroke. Fatty deposits and high levels of cholesterol are some of the reasons ischaemic stroke happens in a person.

Another kind of brain stroke is hemorrhagic stroke, which happens when a blood vessel ruptures in the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke happens when there is a brain injury and the blood vessels rupture, spilling blood into other organs. As the blood vessel ruptures, pressure builds in the brain and the brain cells die, leading to stroke paralysis and, in some cases, death.

In stroke paralysis, there are some changes and symptoms that I have seen in my patients. Most of my patients come with these symptoms and issues after suffering a brain stroke. The problem with a brain stroke is that sometimes an ischemic stroke is silent, and people do not recognize it until it is too late. For example, paralysis in many parts of your body and an inability to control your body movements can be symptoms.

The symptoms might also include sensory problems and issues that lead to pain and discomfort at sudden points in time. For a lot of people, major brain functions like memory and emotional capabilities as well as critical thinking abilities are affected. Many people also suffer from speech problems—an inability to speak at times. Let us focus on stroke paralysis and how stroke paralysis is treated among the symptoms of brain stroke.

Types of Paralysis

When paralysis happens after a stroke, there are different ways it manifests. It is not limited to one organ or just the brain. As the brain controls everything in your body, the paralysis can come up as affecting any part of your body. For example, there could be muscular paralysis, which affects the mobility and movements of the person. There could be visual paralysis where the vision of the person diminishes or he loses his eyesight.

A lot of cases of stroke paralysis happen when the person suffers from loss of speech and language abilities. Apart from this, the person could be feeling numbness in his limbs and hands. Sensory and facial paralysis are also possible. In any kind of stroke paralysis, a certain group of organs are affected, and the Ayurvedic Approach to Stroke Paralysis treats these organs.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Paralysis

Stroke management and treatment are possible in Ayurveda if we stay true to the ancient techniques of tissue and brain healing. Among the Ayurvedic treatments for stroke paralysis, there are five main types of treatment that I recommend to my patients. These five treatments are included in the panchakarma needed to treat stroke paralysis.

Snehana: Snehana is the treatment with medicated oils which happens through Shirobasti, Shirodhara, and other massage techniques. These techniques improve circulation and are also helpful in regenerating the cells and the medicated oils heal your brain tissue.

Massaging the affected areas: The affected areas of stroke paralysis are also massaged with medicated oils so that the nerves and muscles of that side are strengthened slowly.

Virechana: The virechana vidhi is also under the Ayurvedic Approach to Stroke Paralysis as it cleanses the gut and supports the healing of the brain through the gut brain axis.

Basti: The technique of Basti is also a relevant one, which is a form of medicated enema. This is done for around 8 to 32 days, depending on how complicated the paralysis symptoms are. The sooner you start taking the Basti treatment after the stroke, the faster your stroke paralysis will heal.

Nasya Karma: I also conduct Nasya Karma for a week or 10 days so that the blood circulation to the head and shoulders will improve with time. This also repairs the muscles and arteries of the upper body.
