What is Myasthenia Gravis?

What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder that causes weakness in the voluntary muscles that control the mouth, eyes, throat, arms and legs. In this chronic neuromuscular disease, the individual experiences weakness of the skeletal muscles as the antibodies block or destroy neuromuscular transmission, i.e., the communication between nerves and muscles. Individuals affected by Myasthenia Gravis often have difficulty breathing, swallowing, lifting objects, or standing. This disease can occur to anyone regardless of age, but it is more common in women under 40 and men above 50 years. Though there is no known cure for Myasthenia Gravis in modern medicine other than symptomatic management, much more promising results can be achieved through Ayurvedic therapies.

Causes of Myasthenia Gravis

Exploring the root causes of Myasthenia Gravis

Book Now
Myasthenia Gravis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's healthy cells required for normal functioning. This condition may be triggered by irregular antibodies or issues with the thymus gland. The following are considered to be the main causes of Myasthenia Gravis.

Antibodies

When antibodies destroy the neurotransmitter called acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, it results in muscle weakness as they receive fewer nerve signals.

Thymomas

These are rare cancers that develop on the thymus gland. It has been observed that thymoma patients develop Myasthenia Gravis. Abnormalities with the thymus gland are associated with MG.

Hereditary

Although rare, a mother with MG can give birth to children with a similar condition. This neonatal condition often resolves with immediate treatment after birth.

Discover All Natural Approach to Treating Myasthenia Gravis

Ayurveda believes that Myasthenia Gravis is caused by an imbalance of Vata and Kapha Dosha in the muscles. Impairment of the metabolic fire, or Agni, is another factor that leads to the build-up of toxins in the body. Therefore, when Agni is suppressed, it causes an increase in doshas. The focus of Ayurvedic treatment for Myasthenia Gravis is to soothe the vata imbalance and enhance muscle strength. A range of treatments including internal medications, as well as snehana, swedana, nasya, virechana, vasthi, lepana, and more, are effective in managing Myasthenia Gravis. Following that, Ayurvedic therapy for Myasthenia Gravis is administered to boost immunity and provide nourishment to the tissues.

Ayurveda focuses on overall well-being, not just relieving symptoms when dealing with Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Ayurvedic treatments incorporate these herbs, which are believed to work together to not only relieve immediate symptoms but also enhance overall health and vitality. MG treatment consists of Panchakarma, Classical Ayurvedic drugs, Yogic treatment, and Diet therapy. After a proper detoxification therapy, people are given rasayana medications. Rasayana helps to nourish the dhatus (tissues) from the cellular level and thus helping the worn out tissue/cells therby helping to prevent the further deterioration and relapse of the symptoms. Herbal supplements enhance metabolism. Classical Ayurvedic treatments like Pancha Karma support healing, while dosha balancing therapies balance the body’s three doshas. Yoga and Pranayama reduce stress, mainly caused by brain involvement, improving muscle strength. Ayurvedic drugs aid in quicker recovery during treatment.
