Panchakarma is an Ayurvedic treatment that uses five methods to detoxify the body and promote wellness. The Panchakarma treatment program detoxifies and renews the body, mind, and consciousness. Ayurveda is founded on the belief that every human being is unique, represented by a combination of the five essential elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. It is advisable to undergo the Panchakarma procedure periodically to eliminate any irregularities and toxins from the body.
In the modern era, dietary indiscretion and a sedentary lifestyle, along with various environmental and physiological factors, have brought in numerous lifestyle diseases affecting all age groups. Panchakarma involves procedures that cleanse the body by removing all accumulated toxins and impurities from deep levels and bringing balance and harmony to all doshas.
At Ayur Bethaniya Ayurveda Hospital, we provide Panchakarma procedures that are individualized based on dosha imbalances, age, digestive strength, immune status, and overall health condition. Specially trained therapists perform the procedure in a definite sequence for a specified period of time. The Panchakarma treatment procedure is a delightful and comfortable therapy that leaves you in a state of peacefulness and rejuvenates the mind and body to improve self-consciousness. Panchakarma is considered both a preventive and healing mechanism that cleanses the body, removes the deeply lying toxins and impurities, balances the doshas and rejuvenates internally, removing the emotional stress to boost the healing process from various medical conditions. The basic cleansing procedures are discussed below:
Vamana means vomiting for therapeutic reasons. The body releases those toxic acids in this manner. As a preparatory procedure before vamana or virechana a patient is given medicated ghee or any oil, up to a maximum of 7 days, following which they are subjected to a swedana. This process helps to dislodge the toxins from minute channels and bring it to the gastric cavity. On the day of vamana, an empty stomach, you will be instructed to consume a stomach full of milk followed by medicines and then milk again on top of it. This process will cause you to throw up. In this manner, the body eliminates the entire contents in the gastric cavity along with the already present toxic materials dislodged from the channels of the body.. This treatment is mainly utilized for kapha imbalances and detoxification of the lungs and stomach.
During Virechana treatment, a patient is carefully guided through therapeutic purgation. Virechana treatment aims to remove the excess or imbalanced pitta dosha from the body. When Pitta dosha is balanced, it controls all digestive functions and metabolism. If pitta dosha becomes unbalanced, it leads to digestive issues, skin ailments, and liver and spleen disorders. In cases of mild pitta imbalance, medicines can help regulate it back to normal. If the vitiation is severe, the excess pitta needs to be expelled from the body. This is where the Virechana process proves useful.
Medicated oils or herbal mixtures are administered as rectal enemas in Basti Karma. It aids in eliminating toxins and restoring the body’s natural balance. The intestines readily absorb medicine when it is given through the anal route. It is recommended to have this procedure done either in the morning or evening for the best results. To undergo the procedure, the stomach needs to be empty. People with Vata dosha primarily benefit from the Basti procedure. Basti regulates Vata dosha, relieves constipation, and helps remove toxins from the colon.
Nasya is the term for applying medicinal oil via the nose. Nasya is a Panchakarma treatment where therapeutic oils are administered through the nose to detoxify the central nervous system. The practitioner modifies the oil according to the ailment that needs to be healed. To treat underlying issues, the therapy strengthens, clears, and cleanses the nasal passages. Nasya is a great treatment for migraines and headaches. It also helps to clear the sinuses and nasal passages to improve breathing. Conditions such as sinusitis, headache, migraine, and ear, nose, and throat infections can be treated with this therapy.
Raktamokshana is a therapy that effectively purifies the blood by carefully removing small amounts of blood to neutralize accumulated toxins. Ayurveda regards Rakta as equally significant as other doshas and emphasizes maintaining its balance and purification. The vitiation of doshas in the blood can lead to different diseases. Bloodletting, or Rakta mokshana, is a therapeutic process that detoxifies the blood by eliminating vitiated rakta and reducing blood toxicity.
